One agency you won’t find on the list of state agencies cutting back staff and services will be Iowa’s Department of Inspections. Spokesman David Werning explains while a lot of services are being cut as budget belts are tightened, inspectors are responsible for Iowans’ health, safety and welfare.Werning says in some cases, state inspectors skip towns where local authorities will handle the duties.Werning says there are some areas where it just isn’t wise to cut inspections, like health care. The Health Facilities division inspects nursing homes, hospitals, and facilities like dialysis machines, 4200 providers handled by 60 very busy inspectors. Werning says local governments can’t take over some of those inspections because they don’t have the money or qualified staff.
