Iowans who’ve endured severe flooding themselves are stepping forward with cash to help the American Red Cross bail out flood victims in the eastern U-S. At least four people are dead after weekend flooding in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, where damage could exceed 20-million dollars.Bobbie Bishop, spokeswoman for the central Iowa Red Cross chapter, says this flooding is the worst in West Virginia history. Bishop says Iowans well remember the horrible floods of 1993 during which every single Iowa county was declared a disaster area. The high water recently receded from many Mississippi River towns in eastern Iowa, just one of several disasters which have hit the state during the first half of 2001.The Red Cross is in the midst of a national disaster relief fund drive. More than 26-million dollars has been collected toward a 35-million dollar goal. To donate, call the American Red Cross chapter nearest to you.
