Better treatment found for eye cancer

University of Iowa researchers have found radiation is just as effective in treating eye cancer as eye removal. U-of-I ophthalmology professor Dr. Culver Boldt says it’s good news for those who discover they have the rare eye cancer.The University of Iowa was one of 43 institutions which worked on the National Institutes of Health study.About 15-hundred Americans are diagnosed with primary eye cancer every year. Dr. Boldt says the University of Iowa gets about 50 cases each year.Boldt says there will still be some patients who want to have their eyes removed to ensure the cancer doesn’t return, but he suspects most will now choose radiation treatment when they’re told the treatment’s just as effective.
