The Iowa Department of Education says the Mason City Community School District needs to improve the balance of boys and girls in select classes. Superintendent Keith Sersland says there are inequities in some classes, but it doesn’t come as a real shock.Family consumer science classes are mostly girls, with boys making up the majority of the industrial arts classes. Sersland says the state is asking the district to study why gender groups continue to enroll in traditional classes. He says they will try to recruit more students into some classes to have a perfect balance. Sersland says the audit did show a good balance in some of the other classes offered, such as math and science, which have traditionally been more weighted to males than females.Sersland wants to make sure everyone is comfortable taking the classes they want. He says it’ll be nearly impossible to achieve a perfect balance in some classes. Equity reviews are done at all schools across the state every ten years.
