Spots in next week’s state high school baseball tournament will be up for grabs tonight with sub-state finals in class 4A and 1A. In class 4A, sixth-ranked Lewis Central takes on Sioux City North. Lewis Central enters the game having won 17-straight.Coach Lee Toole says he has a group of kids who have molded together very well. He says they’re a bunch of baseball nuts that eat, sleep and drink baseball. A victory tonight would earn the Titans their first state tournament trip since 1991. That was the team’s only appearance. In class 1A, eighth-ranked and defending champion Granville Spalding hosts third ranked West Harrison and the winner earns a trip to Carroll. Spalding coach Bill Wuebker says being one game away from the state tournament adds even more pressure. He says they’ve lost the sub-state game about three times, each a heartbreaker. Wuebker says his team has gotten to this point with good pitching and solid defense.
