Congressman Jim Leach of Davenport says it would be a “profound mistake” to end federal funding for medical research that uses human embryos discarded by fertility clinics. It’s called “stem cell” research, and the Bush Administration and Congress are grappling with the issue. Leach calls it one of the “profoundest” issues in society. Critics say embryos should not be used because it’s like taking a life. Supporters say stem cell research holds the key to finding cures for all sorts of illnesses and diseases. Leach says he comes down on the side that says we should go forward with the research using great care, and with certain guidelines. He says there are types of stem cells that can never be brought together to form a human life. Leach says those cells should be use for research to find cures for diseases.Leach says stem cell research holds the greatest promise to finding cures for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other debilitating diseases. Leach made his comments during taping of the Iowa Public Television program, “Iowa Press.”
