An Ames woman has made her first court appearance on charges of killing her newborn child. The Story County Public Defender’s office was named to represent 34-year-old Ann McGowan during an initial court appearance today in Nevada. Doctors at Mary Greeley Medical Center say the woman checked in Sunday and they discovered evidence that she may recently have given birth. McGowan denied it, but a search of the yard behind her rented house in Ames turned up the body of an infant. County attorney Steve Holmes says McGowan’s bail is set at 250-thousand dollars and she’ll have another appearance set within ten days, at which she may enter a plea. Neighbors say McGowan and a man who lived at the home kept to themselves and they didn’t know the woman was pregnant. No one else has been charged in the case.
