The class 2A quarterfinal round wrapped up Wednesday at the state baseball tournament in Marshalltown. Dyersville Beckman is a step closer to a second straight championship. The second ranked Trailblazers got a five hitter from Luke Helle to down Shenandoah 4-1. Beckman coach Tom Jenk jr. says he emphasized patience at the plate before the game.Shenandoah coach Kevin Whitehill says it was a frustrating night at the plate.Brett Iverson made sure Eagle Grove’s first appearance at the state tournament was a success. The senior righthander tossed a five-hit shutout as the Eagles downed Colfax-Mingo 8-0 in another 2A quarterfinal.Eagle Grove got the only run they would need with a bases loaded walk in the second inning and put the game away by scoring seven times in the final two innings. Colfax-Mingo coach Jeff Lindsay says despite the loss it was a great season.The class 1A quarterfinals wrapped up in Carroll with top-ranked Mason City Newman downing number five Lynnville Sully 6-1.The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Lynnville Sully scored one run. Newman came back to score six runs in the fifth inning and that ended up being the final. Newman coach Tony Adams says it was a matter of his team being patient at the plate.In the other 1A night game, Lansing Kee scored early in the game but gave up a five run third inning to Coon Rapids Bayard to tie the game at 5-5. Kee High rebounded to take the lead back and ended up winning 10-5.
