Former University of Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable has talked to the media for the first time since issuing a written statement announcing he would not run for Governor.Gable says he was 90 percent ready to run, but decided against it for several reasons. His daughter, who’s a senior journalism student at the University of Iowa, urged him not to, and Gable says he was distracted by the media attention to his potential candidacy, although Gable refused most interview requests. On Sunday afternoon, though, Gable talked with W-S-U-I reporter Dean Borg, and the interview was broadcast this morning. Gable said it was a very tough decision. When asked whether he’d consider running for office in the future, Gable said he might, but would go underground to escape the media scrutiny of the decision process. Gable insists he was recruited by Republican party leaders to run for Governor, and if he ever does run for office, Gable says he would probably not affiliate with the G-O-P because he considers himself an independent.
