The computer virus that infected hundreds of thousands of websites last week is expected to return today in a new, more powerful form. The Code Red virus has mutated and replicated and is spreading to more computers that use the Windows operating system. Dan Buda, of the Central Iowa Computer Users Group, says updating your virus protection software frequently is key to keeping your computer and website safe.Buda says to update the virus protection program every week if you spend a lot of time on the Internet, or monthly for less frequent online users. He says it’s best to be cautious when dealing with this sort of damaging virus. While many recent viruses targeted email, Code Red is attacking websites, defacing some of them with the words “Hacked by Chinese,” though Buda says it’s still unclear exactly where it came from. Last week, it damaged 300-thousand websites.
