The class 1A semifinals were featured Wednesday night at the state high school softball tournament.16th-ranked Conrad B-C-L-U-W claimed another victory and again needed extra innings to do it. Freshman Amy Zern drilled a two out double to left center in the top of the tenth inning to score the game’s only run as the Comets downed fourth-ranked Missouri Valley 1-0 and earned a spot in the 1A title game. Conrad B-C-L-U-W’s Amy Zern says despite being hitless in the tournament, she felt she had a chance in the tenth inning because she hit the ball well prior to the tourney.The Comets opened the tournament with a 15-inning victory over Edgewood-Colesburg. Missouri Valley had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth but pitcher Kara Unger was thrown out trying to steal home to end the inning. Missouri Valley coach Christi Gochenour says Unger just missed a spot on the game-winning hit.Jessica Hicks tossed a two-hitter and struck out 16 as third-ranked Colfax-Mingo downed sixth-rated Sigourney 3-1 and earned a spot in the class 1A championship game.Hicks held a good hitting Sigourney team in check. The Savages lone run came on a fifth inning single by Kellie Northrup.In class 1A consolation round action, Alicia Konrad drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Southeast Warren got by Pocahontas Area 1-0.Bouncing back from their 15-inning loss in the opening round, Edgewood-Colesburg downed Rockwell City-Lytton 5-3. Vikings coach Kevin Schuchmann says they want to end the season with a victory.
