President Bush’s point man in international trade negotiations is spending todayand tomorrow in Iowa to talk with farmers and business leaders. U-S Trade Representative Robert Zoellick says the first thing President Bush asked when he interviewed for the job was whether he’d make America’s farmers and the farm trade a priority. Zoellick says the controversy in Europe over genetically modified U-S crops is a key reason why there needs to be a new round of global trade negotiations. He says people in Europe are scared, scared about trouble in their own food system. Zoellnick says they need to solve those problems without blaming the U-S food system.Zoellick says protestors who try to disrupt international trade talks are misguided.Zoellick says protestors are on the wrong side of issue as opening markets is one of the best ways to help the world’s poor. Zoellick says the leaders of third-world nations have little sympathy for the protestors.Zoellick made his comments during a news conference at the State Fair.
