A new study says babies who’re fed soy-based formula end up just as healthy as those who were fed formula made from milk. The University of Iowa study tested over 800 kids who were fed soy-based formula during the first four months of their lives. U-of-I Pediatrics professor Ekhard Ziegler help gather the information.Ziegler says they tested the human subjects in 35 areas and found no significant problems. The study was prompted by reports of adverse affects in animals that were fed soy formula. Ziegler says a majority of today’s babies will eventually be fed some type of formula. Ziegler says 35-percent of babies born today are fed formula instead of breast milk. He says many mothers switch from breastfeeding to formula as their baby gets older and they return to work.He says 20-percent of those formula fed babies are given a soy-based formula — mainly because they’re allergic to milk.
