Iowa is number three when it comes to the A-C-T college exam. Wisconsin and Minnesota students scored just slightly better than Iowa kids, who had an average score of 22. The highest score a student can get on the test is 36. Ken Gullette is director of media relations for A-C-T, which is based in Iowa City. He says Iowa is doing “pretty well.” Gullette says students in Iowa and across the country did better if they took tougher high school courses.Students list their grade point averages, and the A-C-T data shows there’s continued grade inflation in high schools, which Gullette says makes the A-C-T score even more important. Just under 25-thousand graduating seniors in Iowa took the test — 67 percent of the Iowa Class of 2001. Wisconsin’s average composite score was 22.2; Minnesota’s 22.1; Iowa’s 22.0. A few other east and west coast states had higher composite scores, but very few graduating seniors on the coasts take the A-C-T.
