New University of Northern Iowa students will get training again this year in workshops on preventing “gender violence.” The workshops are mandatory for freshmen during orientation at UNI as part of an ongoing effort to combat violence against women. Organizer Karen Mitchell says the workshops present scenarios showing what can happen to students if make the wrong choices.Mitchell says they’re aimed at potential victims and aggressors, but also encourage bystanders to get involved, as they can help head off a problem before it happens.Mitchell says many of the new students on the Cedar Falls campus this fall will be facing these types of situations for the first time. She says that doesn’t mean UNI is unsafe, but says they can always do better. The workshops begin August 25th with the start of orientation.
