The Olympic flame will make a brief stop in Iowa early next year on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah. The carefully housed burning torch will be driven from Kansas City, Missouri, to Council Bluffs on January 10th where southwest Iowans will take it in hand. Council Bluffs city recreation coordinator Cati DeMasiis helping plan the torch run. It’ll be run along a five-mile route through the city. There’ll be 26 torchbearers chosen from the local area, each running about two-tenths of a mile. Council Bluffs is the only city where the torch will be run in Iowa while Omaha is the only city in Nebraska that’ll see the light of the Olympic flame. From there, it’ll be driven to Topeka, Kansas, for another run and eventually it’ll make it to the 2002 Winter Games. DeMasi says the torch will pass through many hands and forms of transportation.Sled dogs, snowmobiles, boats, planes, trains and automobiles will all be use to carry the torch.
