A group of Iowa religious leaders have signed onto a letter calling for the end of United Nations economic sanctions against Iraq. Jeffrey Weiss is a spokesman for the effort that he says includes various denominations.Weiss says the sanctions have hurt innocent Iraqi children. He says Iraq’s infant mortality rate has skyrocketed under the sanctions. Weiss says sanctions have served to strengthen, not weaken, Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s hold over the country. He says that’s exactly what U-S leaders want.Weiss says the U-S wants Hussein to remain strong so leaders can justify the military bases in the Middle East. Weiss says the letter will be sent to Iowa’s congressional delegation, and to President Bush.
