The state’s court of appeals says it’s “reasonable” to keep a convicted sex abuser from Scott County behind bars. Sixty-four-year-old John Johnson argued his constitutional rights to due process were violated because the state parole board wouldn’t interview him in person or provide specific reasons why he was denied release from his 30-year prison sentence. Johnson was convicted in 1990 of sexually abusing a seventh grade girl 30 to 40 times. Prison officials conducting an investigation between the time of Johnson’s jury trial and his sentencing discovered he had sexually abused his two daughters, too. The Board of Parole has said it’s is “not in the best interest of society” to release Johnson, and the Court of Appeals has ruled that decision is “reasonable and proper.”
