Two political rivals had lunch today, and an hour later one of ’em withdrew from the congressional race in Iowa’s new third district in central Iowa. State Senator Matt McCoy, a democrat from Des Moines, says he feels older than his 35 years today as he ends his quest, and decides what’s next.McCoy would have faced an uphill battle against Congressman Leonard Boswell, a democrat from Davis City who’s moving to Des Moines to run in the newly configured central Iowa district. McCoy says he just couldn’t raise enough money to mount a successful challenge as Boswell has the advantage of being an incumbent.McCoy may run, again, for the Iowa House or Senate, but he’s considering other options. He says he wants to “keep all of his doors open.”McCoy works for Ruan Transportation, and invited Boswell to his downtown Des Moines office conference room for lunch — and McCoy picked up the tab.
