Each year, a handful of state workers have their wages garnished for failing to pay their state income taxes. A check in neighboring Illinois found over a thousand state workers are having their wages withheld because they hadn’t paid their 1998 state income taxes. A check of Iowa government workers, though, finds few so far behind in paying their state taxes that they have their wages taken by the state. For the September payroll, just one state worker, an Iowa State University employee, is having their wages garnished. One reason few Iowa government workers get to that stage is that the state withholds all but one dollar of a monthly paycheck if the wages are being garnished for not paying state taxes. Renee Mulvey of the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance says there are special rules should a member of the state tax collection agency fails to pay their state taxes.Workers in Mulvey’s agency can be fired if they fail to pay their state taxes. Mulvey says all state payroll records are checked regularly to see if a state worker is behind in paying their taxes.
