A corn processing plant just across the Iowa/Nebraska border in Blair, Nebraska, will start making fabric this winter. Corn sweetener will be transformed into tiny plastic threads which will be spun into fabric. Edith Munro, communications director for the Iowa Corn Growers Association, says it’ll be the world’ first facility to produce commercial-scale supplies of the product.Munro says this new corn-based product is called P-L-A.The Cargill plant will use 14 million more bushels of corn every year because of the expansion, and Munro says most of that will come from Iowa.Several different firms around the world are testing clothing, like windbreakers, socks and t-shirts, that’s made out of the new, corn-based fabric.
