The crime of identity theft is rising and Senator Chuck Grassley is introducing legislation to try and head it off. He says credit card companies would be required to notify customers whenever new cards are requested on an existing account.Grassley says within 30 days of a change of address request, notification would be sent to the new and former addresses, to allow people to know if someone had infringed upon their accounts. Grassley says the effort to stop identity theft wouldn’t stop there. He says credit-reporting agencies would be required to report discrepancies in addresses. There was an example of identity theft back in March when Des Moines Police and U-S Postal Inspectors broke up what they said was an identity theft ring. They say members of the seven-member ring ripped off the identities of 16 people by stealing information at Des Moines medical offices. They then bought computers on-line using the stolen information.
