Ever thought of trying to take advantage of Iowa’s wind to cut your own power bill? You could rig a generator, but MidAmerican Energy’s Kevin Waetke says it’s not likely to make you rich. It may cut your bill a bit but don’t expect the power company to send YOU a check. Waetke says you can’t just build a wind generator and plug it into the line. They have to register their equipment with the power company, and will likely still pay a power bill. Waetke says you don’t get the same credit per kilowatt of wind-power as the power company charges you, and he explains that’s because you buy more than power. You pay for services from outage response to meter reading, to a customer-service call center. If you’d like to try making your own windpower to cut your bill down, it would be wise to call the power company first.
