Archaeologists are trying to get more Iowans interested in digging into the past this month. Lynn Alex oversees “Archaeology Month” activities for the State Archaeologist’s office in Iowa City. The goal of the month is to get more people involved in archaeology events in the state. Alex says archaeology is important in learning about how our state developed.Alex says there are at least 20-thousand known archeological sites in the state, and there may be as many more waiting to be studied. Some of the sites have already been lost to development and it’s important to take the time to preserve the information found in the sites. Alex says you can get involved in Archaeology Week through local organizations such as schools and libraries. For more information, you can call Alex at 319-384-0561.
