Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence remarked this week on the surge in gun buying nationwide that followed last week’s terrorist attacks out east. The group’s Kirsten Meredith says some dealers doubled their sales the day after the World Trade Center was hit.Because of that, she says the federal background checking system is overloaded. Meredith says she can understand people buying a gun because they want to feel safe.But she says, a gun in the home is more dangerous to the residents than to invaders. Meredith says it could lead to the temptation to commit acts of violence in the name of social justice. She says people who take matters into their own hands threaten the success of justice. The group says times of increased tension are just when people should keep guns locked up in the home and not buy firearms, to avoid adding potentially deadly weapons to an already tense situation.
