Jews in Iowa will help the hungry as they observe a “Day of Atonement” beginning tonight. Deb Finkelstein of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue in Des Moines says the effort called “The Corners of Our Fields” is a way to help others.During the Yom Kippur day of atonement, Jews fast and are asked to think of those in the world who go to bed hungry. Finkelstein says Jews are asked to bring donations to the Yom Kippur service.Members were given grocery bags and envelopes at the Rosh Hashanah service marking the Jewish New Year on September 17th. They’re asked to fill the sacks with food and the envelopes with monetary donations for the hungry. Finkelstein says the Yom Kippur observance begins tonight.The fast begins at midnight tonight and continues through noon tomorrow. Finkelstein says Jews across Iowa and the nation are taking part in the observance.
