A democrat legislator says he’s concerned with democrat Governor Tom Vilsack’s proposal to give a tax credit for college grads who stay in the state. Representative Don Shoultz of Waterloo is a member of the Legislative Fiscal Committee.Shoultz says it doesn’t make sense to cut taxes, then short the regents institutions money so they have to raise tuition, and then give students a tax break on tuition. Shoultz says the legislature and governor can’t keep playing the tax cut game.He says it’s the way they’ve been doing business, but he says it’s not a good idea to continue giving tax breaks, and then cutting the money to the people they serve. Shoultz says this isn’t the first time he’s warned of the problem.Shoultz made his comments during a meeting of the Legislative Fiscal Committee Wednesday in Cedar Falls. Vilsack made his tax credit proposal Tuesday at a business conference in Des Moines.
