Congressman Tom Latham says the Senator who leaked classified information to the media should be sanctioned and perhaps kicked out of the Senate.
President Bush has railed against what he called a breach of national security by an unnamed Senator who revealed classified information.
Latham says “it is totally outrageous that any person would disclose to the press or to anyone classified information.” He says it apparently was an isolated incident.
Senator Tom Harkin, though, says Senators aren’t the worst “leakers” in Washington — people in the White House are. Harkin says “they [the Bush administration] ought to clean their own house up before they start pointing fingers.”
Harkin says the Bush Administration is raising the spectre of press control by asking the media to exercise caution when broadcasting Osama bin Laden’s statements. Bush Administration officials say bin Laden may be using the media to send messages to his followers.
