The president of Iowa-based Ruan Transportation went to Washington this week to tell a congressional subcommittee truckers need security, too. Tony Chrestman says drivers worry about things like cargo theft.
He points out some trucks haul hazardous material like flammable things that could fall into the wrong hands. Chrestman says just getting a commercial driver’s license may allow someone to drive a big rig, but employers want the right to do criminal background checks on drivers they hire.
Chrestman says there are several reasons to safeguard the many kinds of cargo transported by truck down America’s highways.
They carry food, and flammables, and it’s been predicted the next terrorist attack could come by truck. Chrestman told a subcommittee on crime and drugs that another thing that would improve security for trucking firms is better border checkpoints where drivers cross into Canada and Mexico.
