A huge majority of college students are going to a school close to home, and that percentage may climb even higher next fall because of the September 11th attacks.
Drake University president David Maxwell says as a result of the uncertain times, many students don’t want to travel far from home, especially if it involves flying. He says that will not be a good thing for Iowa, as a lot of students come from other states.
Maxwell says there’s also an increased interest in going to school in areas that seem safe, and that may benefit Iowa’s colleges and universities. He says Iowa is considered a safer more peaceful part of the country.
Nationwide, 85 percent of college students are attending a college within 250 miles of their home.
