A warning for hunters: pheasant and other seasons are getting underway, but don’t take the “high road” by walking down rural railroad tracks.
There’s a lot of wildlife habitat along the tracks, especially in the Midwest, but it’s trespassing. Union Pacific spokesman John Bromley says there’s also more danger for the hunters than they might imagine.
Though people say a tornado’s as noisy as a freight train, he says if you’re standing in front of an oncoming train you’ll hardly hear it.
Bromley says a small number of bad hunters also have railroad employees uneasy about gun-toting strangers on the tracks.
Occasionally they get shot at, and people shoot out signs along the railroad right-of-way. Bromley says trespassing is only one of many charges that could be filed against hunters who walk on tracks, shoot at trains, or destroy railroad property.
