While the state is spending millions of dollars to prepare to meet any kind of potential terrorist attack, one expert says there’s a disease that’s getting too much attention. State Environmental Epidemiologist Russell Currier says the concern over smallpox is overblown. He says he’s not worried about smallpox because he just doesn’t think it’s in the hands of terrorists right now. Plus, he says it’s not an easy disease for terrorists to handle. He says there’s an unpredictability that could end up with the agent doing more harm to terrorists than it does to others. Dr. Currier is also not worried about having enough vaccine on hand for smallpox. He says he talked to one expert that says there’s enough on hand to deal with a smallpox outbreak. Currier made his comments Wednesday to the State Board of Health.
