A Northwood nursing home faces a nine-thousand-dollar fine after a resident died after becoming entangled in the side-rails of their bed. The unidentified resident was pronounced dead on September 26th at the Lutheran Retirement Home after being found lying on the floor next to the bed, with the resident’s head wedged between the rails and the mattress. The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals alleges the nursing home failed to provide adequate nursing services and failed to report the death to the proper authorities. Lutheran Retirement Home administrator Grant Brandon says he did not believe there was anything terribly unusual about the death. The home is also accused of not properly telling the family of the deceased all the circumstances about the means of death, and inaccurately reporting the death in its own records. Brandon says the home is considering an appeal of the state’s findings.
