State historic preservation experts are in Iowa City surveying damage from this week’s fire at the historic Old Capitol building. The Historical Society’s Patricia Ohlerking says they’ll be among the first to offer help with the site. She says they’re concerned about both the building and the artifacts inside, since it’s a museum. Ohlerking says the Historical Society won’t rebuild the former capital, but can offer temporary help. First, they’ll freeze everything so it doesn’t get moldy. Conservators who specialize in books and historic items are looking over the building’s contents, and the Historical Society has a fund to stabilize the building. When a historic building’s damaged through “Acts of God” — hail, fire, rain — there is a fund to stabilize the building. While state, University, or private money likely will rebuild the structure and its golden dome, cultural and historical experts will do much of the work restoring the historic treasures inside.
