An Iowa church with direct ties to the Pilgrims is giving us a look today at what those original settlers were like. The Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines will present its annual Pilgrim Thanksgiving service.Pastor David Ruhe says parishioners will dress in the black and white clothing the Pilgrims wore back in the 1700s. Ruhe will deliver the sermon and talk about finding the spirit of thanks despite the circumstances around us. Ruhe says a church pastor started the tradition 51 years ago, he doesn’t know why, but says it’s become an important part of the church. He says the Plymouth Congregational Church is a direct descendant of the church attended by the first Pilgrims.Ruhe says today’s service is very accurate, except for a few added modern conveniences, like the church’s heating system and pipe organ.Ruhe says some of the basic beliefs of the first Pilgrims live on in the church. The 10 o’clock service is open to the public.
