About 72-thousand Iowans won’t be digging into Thanksgiving dinner until after sundown. As Muslims celebrate Ramadan, they abstain from food, drink and other “sensual pleasures” during daylight hours. Imam (ee’-mom) Taha (tah-hah) Tawil (tuh-WEEL’) leads the “Mother Mosque” in Cedar Rapids.Tawil says Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset in order to feel for those who go hungry. The fast also is a means of thanking God.There are an estimated six million Muslims in the U-S, and Tawil says the American tradition of Thanksgiving fits the religious significance of Ramadan.The Imam says Ramadan teaches self-restraint, discipline and generosity.Devout Muslims pray daily, and the ultimate show of faith is a pilgrimage to Mecca.
