While many millions of people will be hitting the malls today, a Sioux City-based non-profit group proposes not spending money on anything today. Jerry Iverson, spokesman for Alternatives for Simple Living, says people tend to get their priorities out of line during this time of year.Iverson says the holidays, especially Christmas, have become a time to over consume instead of a time to cherish family traditions and to honor the birth of Jesus. He says “Buy Nothing Day” is a symbolic effort on what’s traditionally the biggest retail shopping day in North America. Iverson says 20-percent of the world’s population is using 80-percent of the planet’s natural resources. That means about 80-percent of the people in the world are using only 20-percent of the resources. He says Buy Nothing Day is a simple idea with deep implications.
