Iowa Secretary of State Chet Culver visited Washington, D.C. this week to push for passage of the “Help America Vote Act 2001.” Culver, who is also Iowa’s Commissioner of Elections, says the bill would provide two-point-six-five-billion dollars to states to improve the election process.Culver says Iowa could use 10 to 20 million dollars to improve its situation, although he’s not sure how much money they might get.He says there’s a need in Iowa to upgrade voting machines. He says there are still six counties in the state that use lever voting machines, those machines were invented in 1892, and they stop making parts for the machines in 1982. Culver says the bill would also establish minimum standards for state election systems.
