Thousands of Iowans celebrate a special day in their religion today and tomorrow. The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be marked with singing, dancing and prayers, according to Father Kevin Cameron, Hispanic Ministry Director in the Des Moines Diocese of the Catholic Church.The feast marks the visions of Mary seen by a poor man, Juan Diego, in the year 1531 in what is now Mexico City. A church was built on the site where he had the visions and within ten years, it is said six million Aztecs had converted to Catholicism. Father Cameron says there are celebrations of all sorts planned across Iowa tonight.Cameron says the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is something that has spread far beyond just Latinos to all the Americas.Masses will be held in many Iowa towns tonight, many of them starting around 11 o’clock or midnight.
