A guilty verdict was delivered Monday in a Cedar Rapids murder case involving in-laws. Linn County jurors convicted 27-year-old John Buenaventura of killing his sister-in-law on March 9th. The badly beaten body of 26-year-old Sally Malacas was found in a storage closet in the apartment where she lived with Buenaventura, his wife and their two-year-old daughter. Malacas died of a skull fracture. After a seven-day trial, the jury deliberated only three hours. Buenaventura is a native of the Philippines but will not be deported. He faces a mandatory life prison sentence.
