As we reach the midpoint of January, parents may want to see if their kids are getting enough exercise this winter. The chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance at Iowa State University says reports show kids are getting less and less exercise. Jerry Thomas says part of the problem is the cutback of P-E programs in schools.Thomas says the number of youth sports for kids are growing, but he says they aren’t doing enough to keep kids healthy. Thomas says parents need to get involved to see that kids stay active. There are a lot of family activities like walking and gardening that can increase physical activity. He says you don’t have to schedule daily supervised workouts.Thomas says experts used to think you had to have hard workouts that lasted several minutes, but he says they’ve since found it’s more important to move from doing nothing to doing something. He says kids get a lot out of exercise.There are benefits to the heart, and exercise helps build stronger bones. Thomas says exercise also helps kids stay mentally sharp.
