Iowa abortion opponents board a bus tomorrow to head for the nation’s capital. Kim Laube with “Iowans for LIFE” says 80 members plan to attend a demonstration protesting the nearly 29 years since the Roe-versus-Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abortion. The group also plans to meet with Iowa’s congressional delegation and tell their opinions on upcoming issues. Laube says the Iowa group formed shortly before the Supreme Court ruling, and since then its focus has widened. The “life issue” keep growing, adding stem cell and end-of-life issues, and represents life from conception to natural death. Laube was asked if any members have expressed fears about going to Washington, after September’s attacks and the anthrax scare on capital hill. Months ago she’d have said it might be a tough year to get people to go to D-C, but the group that numbered 37 last year has grown to 80 this year. Laube says she thinks people want to make a statement, that terrorism won’t stop them. A bus leaves Des Moines Saturday afternoon, picks up more riders, and a second bus from Dubuque will join the caravan on the way to Washington. On Tuesday, the anniversary of the Roe versus Wade decision, local demonstrations are planned in towns around Iowa.
