Iowa State University’s director of facilities and utilities says progress is being made in saving money on the university’s power bill. In fact, Dave Miller says that bill’s been cut by almost one million dollars. While the Ames campus is big, Miller says it’s the small things that added up.Things like turning off the computer, or a building’s air handlers. Miller says each building on campus was examined for possible savings, and he found many were being kept at the same temperature year-round, just because that had become standard procedure. So now they changed summer temps to 78 degrees, winter temperatures to 68. Miller admits a lot of help has come from Mother Nature this winter, but since taking on the cost-cutting challenge, ISU has lowered its power bill by more than 930-thousand dollars. He says money not being spent on energy can to go other more important things. Miller’s utility department was charged with saving a million and-a-half dollars over the fiscal year that ends in July, and he says they’re two-thirds of the way to that goal.
