The “Iowa Coalition for Sensible Gun Laws” wants a new state law to give cops greater authority to confiscate the guns of accused domestic abusers. Coalition member Christian Meredith says the group also wants legislators to close the so-called “gun show” loophole.The Coalition wants a new state law that would require criminal background checks for firearms sold at gun shows. Meredith says a recent public opinion poll shows Americans want such a law.Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows doesn’t intend to bring up the group’s idea. He says if someone wants a firearm, they’re going to get it somehow. Iverson says in general he doesn’t see it being a huge problem in Iowa.Iowa Coalition for Sensible Gun Laws members are lobbying legislators today at the statehouse. The Coalition for Sensible Gun Laws is made up of Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa, the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Abuse, the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence, the League of Women Voters of Iowa and Quad Citians for Responsible Gun Laws.
