An Anamosa man’s invented a device that will help the handicapped to be more independent. David DeMoss is a former correctional officer at the state penitentiary. He’s invented a device he calls the “Side Chair Wheelchair.” He says it will lift a person over an object, like a bed, so the person can move himself. Right now, most wheelchair users have to rely on someone else to lift them in and out of bed, a tough task. DeMoss began working on the device four years ago. Getting a patent on it cost him 5-thousand dollars in legal fees, and he hopes a company will be able to further the development of his invention.
