A coalition of farm activist groups is planning to run radio ads seeking to derail the nomination of Iowan Tom Dorr to a U-S-D-A post. The ads target nine states which have Senators on the Senate ag-committee, including committee chair Tom Harkin of Iowa. The ads claim Dorr, a farmer from Marcus, “champions corporate family farms that drive family farmers off the land, thinks racial diversity is an obstacle to economic progress, and now there are unresolved allegations that Dorr recieved farm payments for which he knew he was not eligible.” Hugh Espy is a member of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and part of the group called the National Farm Action Campaign that’s buying the ads. Espy says they hope to create enough pressure to sink Dorr’s nomination. Espy says they already know of some senators who’ll vote against Dorr, but he says they want to let those senators make their own announcement.George Naylor is an Iowa farmer who also supports the effort against Dorr. He says Dorr has admitted that he’s a “pariah” in his own community, and Naylor says that doesn’t make it likely Dorr could help people in small communities. Naylor says the ads are only part of the campaign against Dorr. They’ve organized a letter-writing campaign against the Dorr nomination. It is the policy of the Bush administration that nominees not address issues raised about their nominations until the nomination hearings.
