The Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy is asking adults to “Take Five” with their kids today. The five refers to taking five minutes out of your day to talk with your kids about the dangers of drugs. Dale Woolery is the spokesman for the Office of Drug Control Policy. He says you should educate them about why they shouldn’t use drugs and what to do if someone approaches them about drugs. Woolery says you should also set some consequences if they do drugs. One study shows those teens who hear about drugs at home are 50-percent less likely to use drugs. He says talking about drugs is not a guarantee your kid won’t use drugs, but he says it does increase the chances they won’t if confronted by others who want them to use. Woolery says unfortunately, drugs are a part of growing up, and pre-teens are especially vulnerable to the influence of drugs.Woolery says the Partnership for a Drug Free Iowa is supporting the state in the effort, which includes sending flyers to schools across Iowa. He says you can learn more about talking to your kid about drugs by calling 866-242-4111 or by surfing to www.drugfreeinfo.org.They can give you some age specific things to talk about with your kids. Woolery says they’re sending out 50-thousand flyers about the “Take Five” program for fifth grade students to take home to their parents or guardians.
