The chill of winter will be over soon, but something that’ll arrive with the warmer weather is the threat of more dangerous types of storms. Bobbie Bishop is spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of Central Iowa. The agency is honoring its volunteers nationwide during March as part of “Red Cross Month.” Bishop says even when there hasn’t been a major disaster, the Red Cross is serving Iowans by helping people who’re burned out of their home. The Red Cross also provides H-I-V and AIDS education, courses in C-P-R, babysitting, first aid and even pet first aid. Another service Bishop says is keeping her agency very busy on the national scale of late follows the terrorist attacks of nine-eleven.Bishop says it’s a goal of the Red Cross to have at least one person in each of the nation’s 75-million households trained in first aid, C-P-R and the use of an automated external defibrillator, or A-E-D. She says having millions of people trained in vital lifesaving skills makes every one of us a little safer, at home and at work.
