The answer: Johnny Carson. The question: name a Corning native who just made a huge donation to the city’s skate park project. This week, supporters trying to raise money for the project got a check for 75-thousand dollars from the former Tonight Show host, who was born in Corning in 1925. Lori Goldsmith, a member of the citizens’ committee overseeing the project, wrote to Carson recently, since he’d donated 15-thousand dollars to an elementary school playground project several years ago. She says she explained what they were doing and told him how much it would cost.Goldsmith says the committee is now seeking more donations from another celebrity who’s directly related to the sport of skateboarding. They’re asking Tony Hawk, a professional skateboarder, for a donation from his foundation that supports parks in low-income areas.About 90-thousand dollars is needed for the skateboard park.
