An Iowan is one of just four Special Olympic athletes chosen to be a “Global Messenger” for the organization. 18-year-old Katie Meade says she was happy and excited when she learned she was chosen. Meade is a student at Hoover High School in Des Moines. She’ll fly to Los Angeles next week to join the other U-S athletes and eight athletes from other countries. She says there’s several events planned, including a screening of the re-released movie “E-T.”Meade has participated in various Special Olympic events and says it’s been a great experience.The global messengers will serve as spokespeople for the Special Olympics over the next year.
